Jeff Hamilton turned me on to this Ahmad Jamal album (Live at the Pershing) specifically to check out Vernel Fournier’s killer jazz grooves, but Jamal’s use of space and ability to make quarter notes groove, makes for an incredibly rich beginner reading lesson!  The drums are playing a double time feel over the melody, which puts the HH on all of the &’s/upbeat 8th notes.
