Preface
(Exerpt from Melodic Stick Control)
No matter what style of music you play, every great drummer must possess a thorough understanding of how to effortlessly combine double and single strokes; these are the very foundation of all drum vocabulary. Most books that focus on improving techniques and facility will provide a seemingly endless number of sticking variations for you to read through. While this will definitely improve your dexterity, it doesn’t often help to develop your musicality.
Consider these points:
- This traditional approach is likely to train your mind to create music that is dictated by stickings, as opposed to a more organic approach where you train your mind to play stickings that are dictated by the music and the melody.
- Most sticking exercises are continuous with no sense of phrasing. In other words, we spend hours upon hours practicing exercises that train us to fill up all available musical space, to a point where it becomes uncomfortable to leave the necessary pauses to sound musical, and for our audience to digest our ideas.
Some of the ideas in this book are tried and true sticking concepts that are presented in unique musical ways, while others are original ideas that I have created to help bridge the gap between traditional sticking exercises and the music I wanted to create.
Beginning to intermediate drummers will find Melodic Stick Control to be an invaluable and efficient foundation to becoming a more musically mature player, while more advanced and professional drummers will find some innovative concepts to improve their command of the instrument both as a player and educator.
Testimonials
The author has produced something rare here: a sticking investigation that uses melody to shape technique, and not the other way around…It allows you to keep your mind trained on the thing that likely made you want to get behind the kit in the first place: creating music. Read Full Review
This book is the most innovative combination of sticking and musical concepts to date and are a result of Matt’s wide range of musical experiences. While he will tell you that being so diverse has made him a “jack of all trades and a master of none,” I can tell you after checking out this book, that he has become a master of drum pedagogy.
Matson provides a clear, comprehensive approach to introducing these concepts, but don’t let that fool you: this book is not for the faint of heart. There are some real challenges presented, but they all serve to improve your control, musicality, and freedom behind the drum set.
